They Deserve to Have Fun Too: Free and Discounted Experiences for Individuals with Disabilities and Their Families
Caregiving is serious work. The appointments, the paperwork, the advocacy, the around the clock care, it is relentless. But in the middle of all of that your loved one is still a person. Still a child. Still someone who deserves to laugh, play, explore, and experience joy outside of the four walls of home and the inside of a doctor’s office.
And here is something most families do not know. There are programs specifically designed to make that happen. Free and discounted experiences at some of the most iconic attractions in the country, available to individuals with disabilities and their families.
At The Caregiver Playbook we believe so strongly in this that we actively donate to one of these programs to help send disabled children to these experiences. Because giving back is part of who we are and part of why we exist.
Here are the programs every caregiver should know about.
Merlin’s Magic Wand merlinsmagicwand.org/usa
Merlin’s Magic Wand is an international children’s charity and the official charity partner of Merlin Entertainments. They provide free magical experiences for children facing illness, disabilities, or adversity at some of the most beloved attractions in the world including LEGOLAND, Madame Tussauds, and SEA LIFE Aquariums.
For California families this is especially exciting because there are LEGOLAND and SEA LIFE Aquarium locations right here in California. Your child does not have to travel across the country to access this program.
They offer three programs. Magical Days Out provides free tickets to Merlin attractions. Magic On Tour brings magical experiences directly to children who cannot travel. Magic Spaces transforms hospital rooms and care facilities into magical environments.
The Caregiver Playbook Inc. proudly donates to Merlin’s Magic Wand to help send disabled children to these experiences. Because every child deserves a magical day out regardless of their diagnosis or their family’s financial situation.

America the Beautiful Access Pass nps.gov/planyourvisit/passes.htm
This one is a hidden gem that most families with a disabled loved one have never heard of. The America the Beautiful Access Pass is a free lifetime pass available to any US citizen or permanent resident of any age with a permanent disability.
It provides free access to all National Parks and federal recreational lands across the country. That means hiking trails, lakes, beaches, monuments, historic sites, and some of the most breathtaking places in America are available to your loved one at no cost.
The pass covers the pass holder and all passengers in a single vehicle at most parks. And as of 2026 you can store it digitally in your Apple or Google Wallet through the Recreation.gov app so you always have it with you.
You can apply online at recreation.gov or in person at any National Park entrance. There is no age restriction and no income requirement. The only requirement is a permanent disability.
This is one of those programs that once you know about it you wonder how you did not know sooner. Share it with every family you know.
IBCCES Accessibility Card ibcces.org/accessibility-card
The IBCCES Accessibility Card is a free card that provides accommodations and assistance at participating amusement parks and attractions across the country. For California families that includes Disney parks and Six Flags locations.
Once registered online you receive a card that you present at the park to access accommodations. Depending on the park this can include alternative queue options so your loved one does not have to wait in long lines, sensory accommodations, and other accessibility supports that make the experience more enjoyable and less overwhelming.
The card must be renewed on a yearly basis and registration is completely free. It is quick and simple to set up and can make a significant difference in how your family experiences a theme park visit.

A Note About Regional Center
If your loved one is in a Regional Center there may be additional ways to fund recreational activities and community outings through their program. We will be diving deep into that in a future post. In the meantime if you want to know what might be available for your specific situation, book a free 15 minute consultation and we will walk you through it.
Because Joy Is Part of the Plan
Caregiving is more than managing medications and navigating systems. It is making sure the person you are caring for still gets to experience life. Still gets to feel the excitement of a theme park. Still gets to see a new place. Still gets to have a day that has nothing to do with doctors or diagnoses or paperwork.
These programs exist to make that possible. And now you know about them.
Share this post with every caregiver family you know. Because this is exactly the kind of information that changes someone’s day. And sometimes their whole outlook.
